Microsoft Ships Out-of-Band Update KB5086672 to Fix Windows 11 Preview Install Failure

Microsoft released KB5086672, an out-of-band (OOB) cumulative update for Windows 11 versions 25H2 and 24H2, on March 31, 2026. According to Microsoft's support article, the update exists to fix an installation issue that affected some devices trying to install the March 2026 non-security preview update, KB5079391.

While installing KB5079391, affected devices could hit the error: "Some update files are missing or have problems. We'll try to download the update again later. Error code: (0x80073712)." Microsoft withdrew KB5079391 (it is no longer offered) and shipped KB5086672 in its place.

KB5086672 is cumulative: it supersedes previous updates and includes the improvements and features from KB5079391, along with the installation fix. It raises OS builds to 26200.8117 for 25H2 and 26100.8117 for 24H2.

Per the KB article's "Applies To" section, KB5086672 applies to:

• Windows 11 version 24H2, all editions (including LTSC)
• Windows 11 version 25H2, all editions

The KB does not list version 23H2 or 26H1 as applicable. The most directly affected group are devices that attempted to install the March 2026 preview update KB5079391 and encountered error 0x80073712.

KB5086672 rolls up quality improvements from KB5079473 (March 10, 2026), KB5085516 (March 21, 2026), and KB5079391 (March 26, 2026 — no longer offered).

Documented fix

Under [Setup], the KB lists a single documented fix: it resolves the case where installing the March 2026 preview update (KB5079391) failed with error 0x80073712 on some Windows 11 25H2 or 24H2 devices.

The release also updates several AI component versions (Image Search, Content Extraction, Semantic Analysis, and Settings Model, all listed at version 1.2603.377.0) and includes a servicing stack update. The associated SSU is KB5079387 (26100.8112).

KB5086672 is offered through Windows Update for devices that already installed KB5079473 or a later update. Devices with "Get the latest updates as soon as they're available" enabled may receive it automatically; otherwise, go to Settings > Windows Update and choose Download & install. It is also available from the Microsoft Update Catalog.

IT administrators using Microsoft Intune or Windows Autopatch should follow Microsoft's guidance for expedited quality-update deployment (Intune's "Expedite Windows quality updates" and Autopatch's expedited deployment via Microsoft Graph).

For manual offline installation of the x64 .msu, Microsoft documents DISM and PowerShell approaches (equivalent arm64 commands are documented separately in the KB):

The KB article's Known Issues section states that Microsoft is not currently aware of any issues with this update.

A later change-log entry, dated June 4, 2026, notes that Microsoft corrected the x64 and arm64 .msu update strings on the Catalog tab for KB5086672. Admins pulling packages from the Catalog should ensure they have the corrected files.
