Apple Ships Emergency iOS Security Patches
Apple pushed security updates for iOS and iPadOS 15 and 16 on March 12 to address an active exploit called Coruna. The updates target older iPhone and iPad models that can't run the latest iOS 17 versions.
The company didn't provide detailed technical information about the Coruna exploit in its brief announcement. Apple typically reserves such updates for serious security flaws that pose immediate risks to users.
Older iPhone and iPad Users Must Update
The security patches affect users running iOS 15 and iPadOS 16 on older devices. These include iPhone models that can't upgrade to iOS 17 and iPad models stuck on iPadOS 16.
Users with newer devices running iOS 17 aren't affected by this particular vulnerability. Apple continues supporting older iOS versions with security fixes even after newer releases.
How to Install the Security Updates
iPhone and iPad users should check Settings > General > Software Update to download the patches immediately. The updates appear as point releases for iOS 15 and iPadOS 16.
Apple recommends installing security updates as soon as possible when they address active exploits. The company hasn't disclosed whether the Coruna exploit was used in targeted attacks or broader campaigns.
