Microsoft Adds Windows 11 App Removal GPO Control
Microsoft rolled out a new Group Policy option on March 16, 2026, giving administrators centralized control to remove preinstalled applications from Windows 11 systems. The policy setting addresses long-standing IT complaints about bloatware management across enterprise deployments.
The feature expands beyond previous PowerShell-based removal methods. IT teams can now configure app removal through familiar Group Policy management consoles instead of scripting individual uninstall commands.
Enterprise IT Teams Gain Deployment Control
Windows 11 Enterprise and Education editions receive the new policy controls first. Domain-joined systems managed through Active Directory can apply the settings immediately through existing Group Policy infrastructure.
Home and Pro editions won't access these centralized controls. Individual users must continue using Settings app or PowerShell commands for app removal on standalone systems.

How to Configure the New App Removal Policy
Administrators access the setting through Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components. The policy targets specific app packages or applies blanket removal rules across system installations.
Microsoft recommends testing the policy in isolated environments before enterprise-wide deployment. Some system apps remain protected from removal to maintain Windows 11 core functionality.
