About VLANs
What is a VLAN?
A Virtual Local Area Network (VLAN) is a logical grouping of network devices that appear to be on the same LAN regardless of their physical location. VLANs segment network traffic, improve security, and reduce broadcast domains.
VLAN ID Range
VLAN IDs range from 1 to 4094. VLAN 1 is typically the default/native VLAN. VLANs 1002-1005 are reserved for Token Ring and FDDI. VLANs 1006-4094 are extended range VLANs (requires VTP transparent mode on some switches).
Best Practices
- Use descriptive VLAN names
- Document all VLANs and their purposes
- Separate management traffic (VLAN 1 or dedicated)
- Use consistent VLAN numbering across switches
- Implement inter-VLAN routing with ACLs
